PSU Faculty of Science and APPA host regional forum on seaweed and Blue Carbon to advance Net Zero goals
The Faculty of Science, Prince of Songkla University (PSU), in collaboration with the Asia-Pacific Phycological Association (APPA), hosted the 2026 APPA Regional Forum under the theme "Seaweed Blue Carbon for Climate Mitigation" on July 6, 2026, at the Faculty of Science, PSU. The forum brought together researchers, policymakers, and international experts to exchange knowledge on seaweed and blue carbon, while exploring sustainable marine-based solutions for climate change mitigation.
The event addressed the growing global challenges posed by climate change, highlighting the critical role of marine and coastal ecosystems in carbon sequestration. Advancing research on blue carbon is increasingly recognized as a key strategy in reducing greenhouse gas emissions and supporting Net Zero commitments.
The opening ceremony featured remarks from Professor Dr. Sanit Aksornkoae, Chairman of University Council, Associate Professor Dr. Udomphon Puetpaiboon, Vice President for Human Resources and Special Affairs at PSU, Professor Jeong Ha Kim, President of APPA, and Professor Dr. Anchana Prathep, Dean of the Faculty of Science.
Professor Dr. Anchana Prathep emphasized that the forum serves as an important regional platform for strengthening collaboration among researchers, government agencies, and international partners, while advancing scientific knowledge, innovation, and policy recommendations related to seaweed, blue carbon, and sustainable marine resource management.
A key highlight of the opening day was the "Blue Carbon Policy and Government" session, featuring a keynote address by Dr. Pinsak Suraswadi, Director - General of Department of Marine and Coastal Resources. The presentation focused on the role of marine ecosystems in carbon storage and the importance of collaboration among government, academia, and local communities in supporting the transition toward a low-carbon society.
The forum also showcased research on community engagement in blue carbon conservation, including a case study from Libong Island, Trang Province, demonstrating how local knowledge and community participation are essential for the long-term conservation of seagrass ecosystems and coastal resources.
International experts, including Associate Professor Mohammad Rozaimi Jamaludin of Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia and Dr. Liu Zhengyi of the Yantai Institute of Coastal Zone Research, China, shared their latest research on the carbon sequestration potential of seaweed and its growing importance as a nature-based solution for addressing climate change.
The 2026 APPA Regional Forum highlights the Faculty of Science's commitment to advancing internationally recognized research in marine science and environmental sustainability while strengthening academic partnerships across the Asia-Pacific region.
The conference marks another significant step toward positioning seaweed and blue carbon as key components of climate solutions, supporting both Thailand's and the Asia-Pacific region's journey toward achieving Net Zero emissions.
