PSU showcases Ban Bo Rae community tourism research at Thailand Research Expo 2026
Prince of Songkla University (PSU) showcased its research project, "Developing and Enhancing Community-Based Tourism for Sustainable Tourism through the Ban Bo Rae Community Tourism Product Development Research Center," at Thailand Research Expo 2026, Thailand's national research exhibition. The project was presented as a model for applying research to strengthen local communities and promote sustainable grassroots economic development. Held under the theme "Research Synergy: Empowering Research for a Sustainable Thai Economy and Society," the expo took place from 22-26 June 2026 at the Centara Grand and Bangkok Convention Centre at CentralWorld in Bangkok.

The research was led by Dr. Aphirom Promchanya of the Faculty of Hospitality and Tourism, PSU Phuket Campus. The project is based on the principles of Community-Based Tourism (CBT), which places local communities at the center of tourism management. It encourages residents to use their natural, cultural, and social assets to develop tourism while actively participating in planning, management, product development, and sharing the benefits generated by tourism.
The initiative began in 2022 with the establishment of the Ban Bo Rae Community Tourism Research Center in Wichit Subdistrict, Phuket. The center works closely with local residents to strengthen tourism knowledge, enhance the capabilities of local entrepreneurs, develop authentic tourism products and experiences, and improve skills in communication, modern marketing, and hospitality.
The project has since expanded into a community tourism network connecting Ban Bo Rae, Laem Panwa, and Ao Makham communities. The network promotes linked tourism routes, creates added value from local resources, and supports grassroots economic growth while preserving the area's natural environment and cultural heritage.
PSU's participation in Thailand Research Expo 2026 reflects the University's commitment to translating research into practical community development. By sharing its experience and research outcomes, PSU aims to inspire similar initiatives in other communities and contribute to the sustainable development of Thailand's tourism sector through balanced economic, social, and environmental progress.
