11.4.1 Sustainable practices targets

Metric: Sustainable practices

Measure and set targets for more sustainable commuting (walking, cycling or other non-motorized transport, vanpools, carpools, shuttlebus or public transportation, motorcycle, scooter or moped, or electric vehicles) .

Prince of Songkla University (PSU) promotes sustainable commuting by monitoring transportation patterns, operating electric shuttle services, and developing low-carbon mobility initiatives. These efforts support the University’s commitment to reducing environmental impacts and improving sustainable transportation across its campuses.

1. Monitoring Staff Commuting Patterns

In 2025, PSU reported commuting-related information for 1,263 staff members, including 543 living on campus and 720 residing off campus.

The available commuting-mode data indicate the following transportation patterns:

Commuting ModeReported Share
Fuel-powered vehicles60%
Motorcycles30%
Electric vehicles5%
Shared rides or public transportation5%
Total100%

These data provide a preliminary basis for understanding commuting behaviour and identifying opportunities to encourage low-carbon transportation.

2. Electric Shuttle Services and Transport Monitoring

Hat Yai Campus

In 2024, PSU replaced five conventional campus buses with electric minibuses operating on three internal routes.

Based on the University’s published operational assumptions, the transition from diesel-powered buses to electric vehicles is estimated to reduce net greenhouse gas emissions by approximately 1.56 tonnes of CO₂e annually, assuming 300 operating days.

Pattani Campus

PSU Pattani provides four electric shuttle buses, each with 14 seats, serving students, staff, and other campus users. The reported service usage is approximately 1,800 passenger trips per day.

These services support shared transportation and provide a basis for monitoring the use of sustainable campus mobility options.

3. Sustainable Commuting Development and Route Expansion

PSU Hat Yai has developed an electric minibus route expansion initiative to improve connections between the campus and nearby residential areas.

The initiative aims to:

  • Encourage park-and-ride transportation.

  • Reduce reliance on private motorcycles.

  • Improve access to shared electric transportation.

  • Reduce transport-related greenhouse gas emissions.

The University’s published planning scenario assumes that 1,000 commuters per day shift to park-and-ride services, reducing motorcycle travel by approximately 4.2 kilometres per person per day.

Under these assumptions, the proposed expansion could reduce net greenhouse gas emissions by approximately 56 tonnes of CO₂e annually, based on 300 operating days.

This figure represents a modelled potential reduction rather than a verified 2025 operational outcome.

4. Supporting Sustainable Mobility Planning

PSU uses commuting information, electric shuttle operations, and transport development initiatives to support sustainable mobility planning.

The University’s ongoing efforts focus on expanding shared transportation, promoting electric vehicles, improving transport accessibility, and reducing dependence on fossil-fuel vehicles.

These activities provide a foundation for establishing measurable sustainable commuting targets and monitoring progress in future reporting periods.
