11.2.1 Public access to buildings

Metric: Support of arts and heritage

Provide public access to buildings and/or monuments or natural heritage landscapes of cultural significance.

Prince of Songkla University (PSU) promotes the preservation of cultural heritage by providing public access to historically and culturally significant monuments, heritage buildings, museums, and cultural learning spaces. These sites offer opportunities for local communities and visitors to appreciate the history, architecture, arts, and cultural diversity of Southern Thailand.

1. Prince Mahidol Adulyadej Monuments

Monuments dedicated to His Royal Highness Prince Mahidol Adulyadej are located across PSU’s five campuses. These monuments commemorate the University’s historical heritage and honour the contributions of Prince Mahidol to education, medicine, and public health in Thailand. The monuments are freely accessible to the public and serve as places of remembrance and historical appreciation.

2. Public Access to Cultural Heritage Buildings and Learning Centres

Through the Princess Galyani Vadhana Institute of Cultural Studies, PSU provides public access to six cultural learning sites that preserve and promote Southern Thailand’s historical, artistic, and cultural heritage.

In 2025, the Institute publicly announced access to the following six sites:

  1. Southern Thai Culture Museum – Preserves and showcases the traditions, lifestyles, and cultural heritage of Southern Thailand.

  2. Southern Thai Art Gallery – Provides opportunities to appreciate regional artistic heritage and cultural expressions.

  3. Art 3D PSU – An interactive art museum promoting public engagement with artistic and cultural expressions.

  4. The House of Ammart Tho Praya Phibulphithyaphak – A historic house museum preserving local architectural and cultural heritage.

  5. Phra Thepyanmonkol Museum – Preserves religious history and cultural heritage.

  6. Craft Studio PSU Pattani – A cultural learning centre promoting traditional crafts, including batik workshops.

Public Access and Admission

PSU promotes public access to culturally significant monuments, historic buildings, museums, and cultural learning spaces. The University’s Prince Mahidol Adulyadej monuments are accessible to the public free of charge, while cultural heritage facilities managed by the Princess Galyani Vadhana Institute of Cultural Studies welcome visitors under their established admission arrangements.

These initiatives provide opportunities for local communities and visitors to engage with Southern Thailand’s cultural heritage, supporting historical awareness, cultural preservation, and lifelong learning.

In addition, PSU supports public engagement with Pattani’s local heritage through the Pattani Old Town Learning Centre (House No. 5, Kue Da Chino) and the Pattani Studies Learning Centre (PSU Pattani Pirom), which promote awareness of the area’s history and multicultural identity.

By making these culturally significant places accessible to the public, PSU supports heritage preservation, cultural education, and community engagement, contributing to inclusive and sustainable communities under SDG 11.
