6.3.5 Water-conscious planting

Metric: Water usage and care

Plant landscapes to minimise water usage. (e.g. use drought-tolerant plants)

Prince of Songkla University applies water-conscious landscaping practices to reduce irrigation demand across its campuses.

The University prioritises drought-tolerant, native, and low-water-use plants in both indoor and outdoor landscape areas. Examples include Cassia fistula, Terminalia catappa, Plumeria spp., Bougainvillea spp., Ixora spp., and Ficus benjamina, which are well adapted to local climatic conditions and require relatively low levels of irrigation.

PSU also applies sustainable landscape-maintenance practices, including the use of leaf litter and organic material around tree bases to retain soil moisture, reduce evaporation, and decrease the frequency of watering.

Together with mulching, native ground cover, and efficient irrigation practices, these measures help reduce potable water use while maintaining green and attractive campus environments.
