3.3.6 Smoke-free policy

Metric: Collaborations and health services

Have a ‘smoke-free’ policy.

Prince of Songkla University has established a smoke-free policy to protect students, staff, visitors, and members of the public from exposure to tobacco smoke and to promote a healthy university environment.

In 2023, the University announced measures to protect non-smokers in University buildings and public areas. University faculties and units implement the policy through smoke-free zones, no-smoking signage, tobacco and e-cigarette prevention campaigns, health education, and smoking-cessation support.

Smoke-Free Measures

The University implements smoke-free measures across its faculties and public areas, including the installation of no-smoking signs and designated smoking-control areas in accordance with relevant public-health regulations.

University units also conduct awareness campaigns on the health risks associated with tobacco and electronic cigarettes, particularly among students and young people.

Smoking-Cessation Support

The Faculty of Medicine, through the Departments of Family and Preventive Medicine and Psychiatry, together with the Center for Alcohol Studies, provides an Alcohol and Smoking Cessation Clinic at Songklanagarind Hospital.

The clinic supports people who wish to stop smoking, using electronic cigarettes, consuming alcohol, or using other substances, and provides counselling and appropriate follow-up care.

The Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences also supports smoking cessation through community pharmacy counselling, remote cessation services, Telehealth Thailand, and community outreach activities.

Tobacco and E-Cigarette Prevention

Prince of Songkla University promotes tobacco- and e-cigarette-free environments through educational campaigns, student engagement, health-promotion activities, and faculty-level initiatives.

Examples include smoke-free educational campaigns, training activities, and student-led initiatives designed to prevent tobacco and e-cigarette use and encourage healthier behaviours.

Through these policies and supporting services, Prince of Songkla University contributes to reducing exposure to tobacco smoke, preventing tobacco use, and promoting healthier lifestyles among students, staff, and the wider community.
