3.3.5 Mental health support for students

Metric: Collaborations and health services

Provide students with access to mental health support.

Prince of Songkla University provides students with access to a comprehensive mental health support system that includes free psychological counselling, mental health promotion, early intervention, psychotherapy, and referral to specialist psychiatric services.

PSU HomeCare: Psychological Counselling for Students

A key component of the University’s student mental health system is Ban Wai Sai Songklanagarind (PSU HomeCare), a dedicated psychological counselling service for PSU students.

The service is available to students at all levels, from undergraduate to postgraduate study, and provides support for students experiencing stress, anxiety, emotional difficulties, adjustment problems, and other mental health concerns.

Services include:

  • individual psychological counselling;

  • general mental health consultation;

  • psychotherapy;

  • psychological assessment and early intervention;

  • support for students experiencing emotional distress; and

  • referral to psychiatric services when specialist care is required.

Service Utilisation in 2025

In 2025, psychological counselling services were accessed by students across all five PSU campuses. A total of 690 students received mental health support.

Of these:

  • 164 students (23.77%) were male; and

  • 526 students (76.23%) were female.

These figures demonstrate that the University’s mental health support services are actively used by students and are accessible across the multi-campus system.

Counselling is provided free of charge. At Hat Yai Campus, PSU HomeCare is located at the Student Activities Building and provides services from Monday to Friday, 8:30 a.m.–4:30 p.m.

The service works closely with the Department of Psychiatry, Faculty of Medicine, and Songklanagarind Hospital to ensure that students requiring specialist assessment or treatment can be referred for appropriate psychiatric care.

University-Wide Mental Health Support

Prince of Songkla University has established mental health support services across its five campuses. Students experiencing mental health difficulties can receive initial assessment, counselling, and support through designated University service units.

For students assessed as being at risk of self-harm, harm to others, or severe psychological distress, University psychologists coordinate urgent intervention and referral to appropriate psychiatric services.

Mental Health Promotion and Education

The University also provides proactive mental health education and preventive activities. The Department of Psychiatry, Faculty of Medicine, conducts mental health education programmes, conferences, and Psychological First Aid training to improve awareness, early recognition of mental health problems, and appropriate help-seeking.

In addition, University faculties and student-support units organise activities related to stress management, emotional adjustment, resilience, peer support, and psychological well-being.

Additional Free Counselling Services

At Pattani Campus, the Faculty of Nursing provides free mental health counselling for students through its primary care centre.

The Faculty of Dentistry also provides free counselling through academic advisors and psychology professionals, with both onsite and online consultation available. In 2025, 21 students received support through 16 counselling sessions.

Specialist Mental Health Care and Referral

Students who require specialist assessment or treatment can access psychiatric services through the Psychiatry Clinic at Songklanagarind Hospital.

Psychiatrists provide assessment and treatment according to appointment schedules, while students requiring continued specialist care can be referred through the University’s mental health support network.

Through PSU HomeCare, campus-based counselling services, mental health education, crisis support, and specialist referral pathways, Prince of Songkla University ensures that students can access appropriate mental health support according to their individual needs.
