2.3.4 Healthy and affordable food choices

Metric: Student hunger

Provide healthy and affordable food choices for all on campus.

Prince of Songkla University (PSU) provides students, staff, and other campus users with access to a wide range of healthy, diverse, safe, and affordable food choices through faculty cafeterias, campus food courts, cafés, and university markets.

In 2025, PSU continued to promote food affordability, dietary diversity, food safety, and healthier eating through campus-based food services and initiatives across several faculties and campuses.

Affordable Food Options

At the Faculty of Medicine, food prices are specified in the Terms of Reference (TOR) for campus food vendors to help maintain affordability for students and staff.

Examples of regulated food prices in 2025 include:

  • made-to-order meals: not more than 35 THB per dish;

  • Northeastern Thai food: not more than 30 THB per dish;

  • spicy salad dishes: not more than 40 THB per dish; and

  • khanom jeen dishes: not more than 40 THB per dish.

At the Faculty of Liberal Arts, campus food outlets also provide affordable meals for students and staff. Examples include:

  • rice and curry from 27 THB;

  • made-to-order meals from 35 THB;

  • khanom jeen from 30–35 THB;

  • rice dishes such as chicken rice and red pork rice from 37–45 THB; and

  • beverages and snacks at student-friendly prices.

These price ranges help reduce the financial burden of daily meals and support convenient access to food within the University.

Healthy and Diverse Food Choices

PSU food outlets provide a wide range of meal choices to accommodate different dietary preferences and nutritional needs.

At the Faculty of Medicine, available food categories include:

  • made-to-order meals;

  • Thai Buddhist food;

  • Thai Muslim food;

  • vegetarian food;

  • snacks and bakery products;

  • beverages and fresh coffee; and

  • fresh fruit and desserts.

The Faculty of Agro-Industry also provides a range of meals and beverages through AGRO Café and faculty food outlets, including rice dishes, curry, noodles, soup, fruit, snacks, and beverages.

At Trang Campus, PSU FOOD PARK and other campus food-service locations provide students and staff with convenient access to a variety of meal choices through three main food-service areas.

Healthy Food Initiatives

The Faculty of Dentistry implements the “Less Sweet, Still Delicious” initiative and provides alternative food options under a programme that encourages reduced sugar intake.

The faculty food court includes several food and beverage outlets, supporting access to a variety of meals while promoting healthier consumption.

PSU Agricultural Market: Access to Fresh and Safe Food

The PSU Agricultural Market, Faculty of Natural Resources, is another important source of healthy and affordable food within the University.

In 2025, the market had 134 vendors and operated from Monday to Friday. It offered:

  • pesticide-safe vegetables and fruit;

  • fresh vegetables;

  • fish, crab, shrimp, and other fresh food;

  • cooked meals;

  • snacks and desserts; and

  • food and agricultural products developed by PSU students.

The market promotes food security, dietary diversity, and access to fresh agricultural produce while also encouraging environmentally responsible consumption.

Affordable and Sustainable Food Practices

The “Lard Khon Kan Eng” initiative provides healthy menu options and pesticide-safe vegetables at special prices.

Students and staff who bring their own containers for food or beverages can receive discounts, helping to make food more affordable while also reducing single-use packaging.

Food Safety and Hygiene Monitoring

PSU also monitors food-service hygiene to support access to safe and healthy food on campus.

At Surat Thani Campus, food outlets are inspected according to food-sanitation standards on a regular basis each semester. In 2025, a formal inspection of food-service establishments was conducted on 25 August 2025 by the campus food-sanitation committee.

These inspections support the maintenance of appropriate hygiene and food-safety standards among campus food-service providers.

Supporting Healthy, Safe, and Affordable Eating on Campus

Through regulated food prices, diverse meal choices, access to fresh and pesticide-safe produce, healthy-eating initiatives, and food-sanitation monitoring, PSU supports an inclusive campus food environment for students and staff.

These measures help ensure that campus users can access food that is nutritious, varied, safe, convenient, and reasonably priced, while also supporting healthier eating habits and responsible consumption.
