2.3.3 Sustainable food choices on campus

Metric: Student hunger

Provide sustainable food choices for all on campus, including vegetarian and vegan food.

Prince of Songkla University (PSU) provides a diverse range of food choices for students, staff, and other campus users, including vegetarian, Thai jay (plant-based), Muslim/halal-compatible, fresh fruit and vegetable, and other healthy food options.

In 2025, food services across PSU faculties and campuses continued to expand dietary choice, accessibility, and sustainable consumption through campus food courts, faculty cafeterias, and the PSU Agricultural Market.

Diverse Food Choices across Campus

PSU provides a wide variety of food services to accommodate different dietary preferences and cultural needs.

At the Faculty of Medicine, food vendors provide a range of options including made-to-order meals, Thai Buddhist food, Thai Muslim food, vegetarian meals, snacks, bakery products, beverages, fresh coffee, fruit, and desserts.

The Faculty of Agro-Industry also provides accessible food and beverage services through AGRO Café and campus food outlets, offering meals such as made-to-order dishes, rice and curry, noodles, soup, fruit, snacks, and beverages.

At Trang Campus, PSU FOOD PARK and other food-service areas provide students and staff with access to a variety of meals. The campus operates three principal food-service locations: PSU FOOD PARK under Learning Building 1, a food-service area under the student residence, and another campus food-service point.

Vegetarian and Plant-Based Food Options

PSU food-service records classify campus food outlets by food type, including:

  • Thai food;

  • Muslim food;

  • jay/vegetarian food;

  • snacks;

  • beverages;

  • fruit;

  • vegetables and fruit;

  • fresh seafood;

  • general retail; and

  • convenience-store services.

This classification demonstrates that vegetarian and plant-based choices form part of the University’s campus food environment.

The PSU Agricultural Market, Faculty of Natural Resources, also provides a range of freshly prepared jay food, including savoury dishes and desserts. In 2025, these plant-based food options were particularly promoted during the Thai Vegetarian Festival from 21–29 October 2025.

PSU Agricultural Market: Supporting Sustainable Food Choices

The PSU Agricultural Market is an important part of the University’s sustainable food environment.

In 2025, the market comprised 134 vendors and operated from Monday to Friday. It offered a diverse selection of food and agricultural products, including:

  • pesticide-safe vegetables and fruit;

  • fresh vegetables;

  • fish, crab, shrimp, and other fresh food;

  • cooked meals;

  • snacks and desserts; and

  • food and agricultural products developed by PSU students.

The market supports food security and dietary diversity while also encouraging more environmentally responsible consumption. Consumers are encouraged to reduce plastic-bag use by bringing reusable cloth bags, while some vendors use natural materials such as banana leaves as alternatives to plastic packaging.

Healthy and Low-Waste Food Choices

PSU also promotes food choices that combine health and environmental responsibility.

The “Lard Khon Kan Eng” initiative provides healthy-menu choices and pesticide-safe vegetables. Students and staff who bring their own food or beverage containers can receive discounts, encouraging reusable-container use and helping reduce single-use packaging.

Building an Inclusive and Sustainable Campus Food Environment

Through diverse campus food services, vegetarian and plant-based choices, access to fresh and pesticide-safe produce, support for local agricultural products, and initiatives to reduce single-use packaging, PSU promotes a more inclusive and sustainable food environment for students, staff, and campus users.

These initiatives contribute to healthier dietary choices, greater food diversity, more responsible consumption, and reduced environmental impacts associated with campus food services.
